Speech, language and auditory processing therapy.
Speech therapy is offered on a private basis, at Van Riebeeckpark Primary School and the following backlogs are addressed.
Language Learning Disability:
Delayed or deviant language development that interferes with learning. These include, children with poor syntax, confusion in language, limited vocabulary as well as children who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally, (as well as in writing). The learning process is totally dependent on LANGUAGE! Children use language for LEARNING, THINKING and EXPRESSION.
Auditory processing problems:
This involves processing and interpreting auditory information. Problems with this lead to poor listening skills in class contexts and problems with reading and spelling. With school entry, learners should already be able to switch words AUDITORY together (synthesis) and extract AUDITIVE from each other (analysis). Auditory processing forms the basis of all speech/language abilities.
Articulation problems:
Incorrect pronunciation of sounds. By school age, a child should correctly and clearly articulate all sounds! Articulation should be clear and accurate already at 4-5 years old!
Speech fluency:
Any fluency or deviant speech speed should be handled by the speech therapist.
Voice Discrepancies:
Voice problems present in the form of hoarseness, absentee voice, faulty pitch and loudness.
Attention and concentration:
Auditory attention is extremely important for scholastic performance. Children are occupied with visual stimuli such as computers, TV and other electronic devices. They are given very little boat to auditory stimuli!
Support takes place at school, during school hours.
Medical aid rates/ claim directly from medical aid for enquiries.

Van Riebeeckpark Primary School offers extra intervention classes, after school in the mornings, to all learners who exhibits dysfunctions (fall-outs) and problem areas. Learners who are borderline cases, or learners who failed, will receive letters to attend these classes. We offer Home Language, Additional Language, as well as Maths and Reading.
We are in the privileged position to have a support and remedial teacher on staff, during school hours, for our Gr 1 - Gr 3 learners. Learners identified with dysfunctions (fall-outs) and problem areas, are referred to this teacher for individual support and attention. This way we ensure that work that has already been dealt with, is revised and exercised. We believe that this is definitely a win-win situation.
Regular attendance by the relevant learners, and off course parents’ support, may just be the boost required to put the child on the road to success. When children experience success, it builds their self-image and self-confidence.
Tear-off slips are handed to the relevant learners and the slips should be signed by the parents and returned to the school immediately.
